What is TNFD and why does it matter to your business?
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is an international framework that guides companies and financial institutions in identifying, managing and reporting their risks and opportunities related to nature and biodiversity.
Just as TCFD did for climate, TNFD is redefining the global standard of corporate transparency regarding nature - and investors, clients and regulators are already demanding this shared language.
The disclosure framework follows four core pillars: governance, strategy, impact and risk management and metrics & targets, placing biodiversity right at the center of corporate management.
DIRO - the core of the analysis
D
Dependencies
How your company relies on ecosystem services like water supply, soil quality regulation, and pollination to operate.
I
Impact
How your activities affect nature, including waste and effluents disposal, land use, and native species.
R
Risks
Physical, regulatory, financial, and reputational risks related to nature and biodiversity loss.
O
Opportunities
Include new business models, access to green capital, biodiversity credits, and nature-based solutions.
Why act now
The risks of inaction
Organizations that fail to assess and manage nature-related risks are already facing consequences on four fronts.
Regulatory risks
Frameworks like CSRD, ESRS E4 and EUDR are expanding transparency requirements for organizations operating in Europe and across global value chains. Non-compliance creates legal exposure and commercial barriers. The potential integration of nature-related issues into these regulations also represents a future risk.
Financial Risks
It is becoming increasingly difficult to access green bonds, ESG credit lines, and capital from institutional investors, who are now demanding nature-related risk assessments.
Physical and operational risks
Dependence on ecosystem services such as water supply, land use, and pollination leads to greater exposure to droughts, floods, and water scarcity, which can severely compromise value chains.
Reputational risks
The lack of a clear biodiversity strategy can result in the loss of contracts, public scrutiny, and brand damage, especially in sectors such as agribusiness, cosmetics, and mining.
